What is Tire Pressure monitoring system

MONITORING SYSTEM FOR TIRE PRESSURE (TPMS)

SEE WHY A TMPS IS A CRUCIAL PART OF YOUR VEHICLE'S FUNCTION AND LEARN HOW TO READ IT.

WHAT IS TRANSPORT PROTECTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (TPMS)?

The Tire Pressure Monitoring Device (TMPS) is an electronic system installed in your car that continuously monitors the air pressure in your tyres and informs you when it becomes dangerously low.

WHY ARE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH TPMS?

To assist drivers understand the critical nature of tyre pressure safety and maintenance, Congress approved the TREAD act, which mandates that the majority of cars manufactured after 2006 be fitted with TPMS.

HOW DOES THE MONITORING SYSTEM FOR TIRE PRESSURE WORK?

Today, two distinct kinds of TPMS systems are in use: direct TPMS and indirect TPMS.

Direct TPMS monitors the air pressure in each tyre using a sensor located in the wheel. When the air pressure in your automobile falls by 25% below the manufacturer's suggested level, the sensor conveys the information to the vehicle's computer system, which activates the dashboard indication light.

Indirect TPMS communicates with the Antilock Braking System (ABS) wheel speed sensors in your vehicle. If a tire's pressure is too low, it will roll at a slower rate than the other tyres. Your car's computer system detects this information and illuminates the dashboard indication light.

WHICH BENEFITS ARE AVAILABLE FROM TPMS?

TPS alerts you when the tyre pressure in your car is low or is about to go flat. By assisting you in maintaining optimum tyre pressure, TPMS may improve your vehicle's handling, reduce tyre wear, shorten braking distance, and improve fuel economy.

IS MY VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH A MONITORING SYSTEM FOR TIRE PRESSURE?

If the "low tyre pressure" warning light illuminates on your display when the key is switched to the "on" position, your vehicle has TPMS.

WHAT ACTION SHOULD I TAKE IF MY WARNING INDICATOR TURNS ON?

Check the air pressure in your tyres and inflate any that are low (as recommended by the manufacturer). When the tyre is properly inflated, the indication light should turn off.

If required, replace the tyre with your spare and make any required repairs or replacements at your local Tires Plus shop. To identify the issue, they'll check your vehicle's tyre pressure and run a system test on all of your tyre sensors. After addressing your vehicle's tyre requirements, our professionals will recommend the necessary maintenance to get you back on the road safely.

WHY IS TIRE MAINTENANCE EXPENSIVE WITH DIRECT TPMS?

Direct TPMS equipped tyres cost somewhat more to maintain than non–equipped tyres due to the additional components and work required for optimum maintenance. When a tyre is detached for repair or replacement, the valve service kit, which contains the valve core, cap, nut, and o–ring (seal), must always be changed. To inspect and reset the sensor system, a specialised TPMS tool and extra time are required.
